Bear 9 - Fierce Protection - Fine Art Print - 148 Bears Project
The original of this bear only lasted 15 minutes online because her message so spoke to my client. This bear is the very embodiment of raw feminine matriarchal POWER.
This explanation needs to be in here; one of my more major flaws as a human is that, studying them and roaming around where bears are, I am always having to talk myself down from petting them....why do they look so huggable when they are so very not? Why those ears, if I can't scritch?
The exception to this rule is the polar bear. Even a bear lover like myself makes no mistake here. One look and you just know deep within you that this is not an animal that you should get close to. They project strength and ferocity from so very far away, the mother especially. The polar bear is the animal you are drawn to if you have stepped into that era, the "I will not take any shit from anyone, the end." era. And as much as I don't love to generalize on age, I witness it with joy when a woman hits her forties, and it is glorious. It can also happen after a divorce or a transition. She takes stock, realizes just how gloriously powerful she is, realizes she may have been dimming that light for too long, and she ROOOOOOARS.
There is no going back.

Welcome to the 148 Bear project. It’s an odd number right? In 2017 a bear I had grown quite attached to, called Bear 148, was shot by a hunter after a relocation to BC. She had gained quite a lot of notoriety for her familiarity with humans in the parks, roaming around Canmore and Banff, watching sports be played in the soccer fields. She had hundreds, literally hundreds of interactions with humans that were non-threatening, and was shipped off and then hunted. In my opinion Bear 148 is a symbol for our failure to interact with bears in any other way other than as a threat or as waste. Grizzlies are gorgeous, powerful creatures, and deserve to share the forests and land with both the respect and admiration that is due to them. I will be painting 148 bears, from Black to Spirit to Grizzly to Polar bear, because I feel like all these creatures speak to the critical state humanity has reached, regarding having a life of connection with the other creatures that bless us with their presence on this planet. Bear 148 was a gorgeous and peaceful bear, and she will be the 148th painting in this process.
